Means of Support

For the honor and financial rewards granted to the recipients of Shanghai Science and Technology Award for Natural Science, please refer to the notice in the current year. The award is divided into three grades: the first award, the second award and the third award. The top award can be granted to citizens or organizations that have made particularly important science discoveries or technical inventions.

Application Conditions

1. The award is granted to citizens or organizations that have elaborated significant scientific phenomenon, characteristic or law, or have made major scientific discoveries in basic researchand applied basic research;

 (1) It has not been discovered or elaborated by any forerunner means that this discovery of natural science is put forward for the first time both home and abroad or the scientific theory thereof is elaborated for the first time both home and abroad, or the major treatise is published for the first time both home and abroad.;

 (2) It has great scientific value means that this discovery is creative in the scientific theory or doctrine, or is new in research methods or means; and the said discovery has great significance in promoting the development of the subject or has great influence on the economic construction and social development;

 (3) It has been recognized by the natural science community both home and abroad means that the major treatise has been published in any academic publication which is circulated both home and abroad or it has been a year since its publication in the form of a monograph, and the significant scientific conclusion thereof has been openly quoted or applied by people working in the same field both home and abroad in any important international academic conference or in any openly circulated academic publication, especially in a key academic publication or academic monograph.

2. The candidate should be the principal researcher and meet one of the following conditions:

 (1) Putting forward the overall academic idea and research scheme;

 (2) Discovering significant scientific phenomenon, characteristic and law, and elaborating the scientific theory and doctrine thereof;

 (3) Putting forward research methods or means, solving key difficult academic problems or experimental technology cruxes, and systematically collecting and comprehensively analyzing key basic data, etc.;

3. The essays and treatises submitted by the recommended candidates for Shanghai Science and Technology Award for Natural Sciencemust have been published for over 2 years.

Handling Procedure

1. Qualification for recommendation

Recommendation by units: The commissions, offices and bureaus of the municipal peoples government, the district peoples governments, group companies and other competent departments or units as identified by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission as qualified for recommendation are responsible for recommending projects undertaken by organizations and individuals within their respective jurisdiction;

Recommendation by experts: A project can be recommended jointly by three experts who are academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering or winners of the Shanghai Prize of Science and Technology Heroes, or can be recommended by one winner of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award of China.  

2. List of recommendation published for public supervision

Any project that is recommended for Shanghai Science and Technology Award for Natural Science must be announced for supervision at the major contributing unit before application. It will be published on the bulletin board or online, for no less than one week. A project can be recommended only if there is no objection or everything is straightened out in the event of objection. The major contributing unit then reports the contents and result of the announcement for supervision to the recommending unit, and the latter should submit them in the form of written report. The list of projects passing the examination of forms will be released for supervision on the website of Shanghai Science and Technology Awards.

3. Recommendation

Each of the units can log on the Shanghai Science and Technology AwardsManagement Platformto fill in and submit the application form. The recommendation number and check code of the recommending unit will be issued separately, and the applying unit should apply to the corresponding recommending unit for its recommendation number and check code.

Required Materials

1. Recommendation letters in different formats are adopted for projects in different award categories. Recommendation letter shall not contain confidential contents;

2. Recommendation materials should include: 1 set of written recommendation materials (bound volume of recommendation and appurtenant materials (original); the electronic versions of the master document and attachments should be submitted online;

3. Each of the recommending units and referrers should carefully review the authenticity of the recommendation materials, and give written recommendation opinions affixed with the official seals of the recommending units or the referrers.
